Programme

The one-week summer school, aimed at PhD students, Postdocs & Early Career Academics, will be hosted between the Henry Royce Institute and Manchester Metropolitan University. There will be five focussed days: i) Numerical Modelling (e.g., finite element), ii) Analytical Modelling, iii) Manufacturing, iv) Experimental Methods, and v) Career Progression/Funding. These will include invited summary lectures and specific state of the art talks from internationally recognised academic and industry experts. As exciting topics with local expertise, we will run metamaterials sports engineering linked projects as part of this event. Delegates will be encouraged to publish their findings in the Sports Engineering journal’s topical collection on metamaterials.

  • Homogenisation and optimisation of mechanical metamaterials for impacts (Olly Duncan).
  • Adaptive mechanical metamaterials for sports applications (Tom Allen).
  • Replicating cranial bone properties (Keith Winwood).
  • An acoustic meta-surface approach to golf club face design (Gregory Chaplain).
