£4M in funding for NEUROBOT Project
Our mission is to create NEUROBOTS that work seamlessly with the brain’s natural functions, offering treatments that adapt to each individual’s needs. Through collaboration and innovation, we aim to redefine what’s possible in epilepsy therapy—and beyond.’
Dr Rupam Das (University of Exeter Lead for the NEUROBOT Project)
The NEUROBOT Project, a £4m new project to investigate the potential of ‘neurobots’ to treat epilepsy, with a technological focus on wireless implantable electronics using patterned metasurfaces will be coordinated by the University of Glasgow. The project involves collaboration with leading institutions across the UK and Europe.
The NEUROBOT project is one of 18 teams funded by ARIA’s Precision Neurotechnologies programme, with £4M in funding over four years. The project, which commences in April 2025, aims to develop groundbreaking neural robots (micron size neurobots) for closed-loop neuromodulation, with a primary focus on epilepsy treatment.
NEUROBOT combines expertise in advanced materials, implantable electronics, neurobiology, and AI-driven systems to deliver next-generation neural interfaces.
Metasurfaces ensure long-term, consistent operation of the tiny neurobots, by eliminating the need for wires or bulky batteries. This makes them a viable, minimally invasive solution for real-time brain monitoring and therapeutic intervention. This technology is critical for enabling next-generation neuromodulation therapies.

The project mission is to create personalised, minimally-invasive therapies that enhance treatment outcomes and improve the quality of life for patients. NEUROBOT will achieve this by addressing the shortcomings of traditional deep-brain stimulation methods—such as disruption to normal brain function and significant side effects.
The Neurobot team comprises of:
- Hadi Heidar (University of Glasgow)
- Rob Wykes (University of Manchester)
- Rupam Das (University of Exeter)
- Andrew Jackson (Newcastle University)
- Luca Berdondini (Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia)
- Maria Cerezo Sanchez, (Neurobite Technologies)
