Submit your project proposal by 21st February 2026.
The UKMMN will be sponsoring a limited number of metamaterials summer studentship projects in 2026. ECRs (including PhD researchers with permission of their supervisor) are invited to propose projects on discovery experimental science for review by the UKMMN’s Executive Board.
The projects are expected to be 6-8 weeks long. The student will be paid £15.07 per hour (including holiday pay) and are expected to work up to 36.5 per week. There will be a consumables budget of up to £300 to support each project as required. No further funds are provided to support relocation. ECRs and PhD students (with approval from their supervisor) are invited to put forward project ideas in the following categories by 16:00 GMT on the 21st February 2026.
Reporting requirements
- Each project will conclude with a 1-page report written by the undergraduate student (with support from the ECR/PhD student if required and signed off by the academic lead).
- The lead academic will be asked to summarise the key project information, data and findings in a short power point presentation that can be used for circulation on the UKMMN’s website and social media
Eligibility Requirements
- Applicants must be in EPSRC eligible posts which will outlast the Summer Studentship.
- All projects and students must be based in the UK.
- All projects must be metamaterials.
Support
The UKMMN will manage the payment of students. All Network-funded projects must be open access.
