Mechanical Metamaterials SIG Town Hall

This will be a discussion-based event, seeking feedback on community strategy following acceptance of our academic roadmap in Smart Materials and Structures.

Who should attend?

Anyone with an interest in engaging with the mechanical metamaterials SIG

What does it cost?

The event is free of charge.

Topics

  1. 1) Community-wide strategic initiatives:

i. Pursuing an EU cost-action.

iii. Standardisation of terminology and measurement.

  1. 2) Outreach and education (addressing skills and awareness gaps):

i. General graphical / video explainer (as with Acoustic SIG).

ii. Theoretical video-explainer/lecture series (and shared pdfs).

iii. Applied video-explainer series for practitioners (how to use available tools to design metamaterials).

iv. Long term vision: From Courses/certification to resource sharing.

Programme: Mechanical Metamaterials SIG Townhall
10:00 – 11:00: Arrival, registration, and refreshments
11:00 – 12:00: Community-wide strategic (funded) initiatives. This will include a 15- minute introductory talk, followed by half hours of targeted discussions, then 15 minutes of feedback:

  • Pursuing an EU cost-action
  • Preparation for doctoral training award announcements

Break (15 minutes)

12:15 – 13:00: Standardisation of terminology and measurement (15 minute talk from NPL, half hour discussions and feedback)

Lunch (1 hour)

14:00 – 16:30: Outreach and education (addressing skills and awareness gaps): Following a short introduction, we will split into discussion groups for ~ 1 hour to take
community input on topics to include in the following:

  • General public – (as with Acoustic SIG).
  • Industry & practitioners – (how to use mechanical metamaterials, and available tools to them).
  • UG and PGR content – (video-explainer/lecture series, and long-term vision for courses/certification and resource sharing).
  • Wild card

Halfway through discussion, we will have a short break, then encourage people to visit a different group. During the final half hour, we will spend about half an hour collating and discussing feedback – while revisiting long term vision for the SIG.
