National Materials Innovation Programme Launched
On 19th February, Lord Vallance launched the National Materials Innovation Programme (NMIP) during his opening address at Innovate UK’s Materials Research Exchange, describing it as ‘an £80m investment to accelerate the time it takes to go from discoveries in the lab to the products that improve people’s lives.’ He also highlighted metamaterials research as a key opportunity to build on fundamental curiosity?driven science.
Advanced materials permeate nearly every technological aspect of modern society, impacting diverse growth-driving sectors such as healthcare, aerospace, automotive, defence, emerging technologies, and energy. The NMIP investment will support efforts to develop cutting?edge materials – from lighter, more efficient aircraft components to long?lasting medical implants.
With the majority of the £80m being, delivered by Innovate UK and EPSRC on behalf of UK Research and Innovation, the overarching objective of NMIP is to establish a nationally coordinated approach to the UK advanced materials sector. The programme is designed to address fragmentation within the materials landscape and strengthen the UK’s position in key industrial areas.
NMIP aims to establish a new nationally coordinated approach to the UK advanced materials sector. By coordinating activity across organisations and sectors, it will help UK innovations move more efficiently from laboratory research into industrial application.
