About the Mechanical Summer School

Date: Monday 18th August (morning – Sunday 17th arrival encouraged) until Friday 22nd August (afternoon).

Format: In person only, attendees are encouraged to participate throughout.

Venue: University of Southampton.

Travel: Attendees are expected to arrange their own travel to the venue. The campus and accommodation are in Southampton.

Accommodation: Accommodation can be provided from Sunday 17th August until Friday 22nd August in Southampton University student halls.

Fees

We ask for a non-refundable commitment fee of £300 for UK delegates and £600 for international delegates. The fee is to be paid by the successful applicants within a week of receiving notice of their place at the Summer School. A link to the payment page will be provided in the invitation to register.

The event is supplemented by the UK Metamaterials Network, who also provided funding for UK delegate accommodation and board from Sunday to Friday.

Programme

The one-week mechanical summer school, aimed at PhD students, postdocs, and early career academics, will be hosted by the UK Metamaterial Network and the University of Southampton. This program will cover various modeling aspects of mechanical metamaterials through engaging minicourses, hands-on projects, and insightful standalone lectures. Participants will gain insight into the foundations of mechanical metamaterials and explore the latest ideas and applications. Topics will include:

• Engineering the Impossible: Algorithmic Design of Unconventional Mechanical Metamaterials (Pooya Sareh)
• Elastic Metamaterials (Gregory Chaplain)
• Design and development of biobased and porous metamaterials (Fabrizio Scarpa)

The school will also feature project work, group presentations, poster sessions, and site/lab visits. This initiative aims to foster a collaborative and innovative learning environment, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and driving progress in mechanical metamaterials research.
